A definitive guide to the vineyards of Hampshire

Discovering The Heart of Hampshire's Thriving Wine Industry

Welcome to our exploration of the Hampshire wine scene, which is at the forefront  of the rapidly growing UK wine industry. In recent years, English wines have surged in popularity and prestige and have captured the attention of wine enthusiasts and critics alike. This success is the result of great craftsmanship, innovation, and, most importantly, the unique terroir that Hampshire has to offer.

Hampshire’s rolling hills and chalky soils has emerged as a premier destination for viticulture. The county's climate, often compared to that of the Champagne region in France, provides the perfect conditions for producing excellent sparkling and still wines. Cool temperatures allow for a slow ripening process, preserving the acidity and delicate flavours that define Hampshire wines. Additionally, the south-facing slopes and well-drained soils contribute to the high quality of the grapes, resulting in wines with distinct character and finesse.

Let us introduce to the ever-growing list of vineyards that make Hampshire a wine lover's paradise. Each vineyard has its own unique story, from family-owned estates with centuries of history to modern, innovative wineries.

Planted in 2011 with an even split of pinot meunier, pinot noir and chardonnay vines, Burges Field's gentle south-facing slopes have their heads in the chalky Hampshire downs and their toes in the sparkling headwaters of the River Itchen.

Managed by the four siblings that reside over The Grange Estate, a faded yet fabulous neo-classical icon in the heart of Hampshire, where the celebrated opera and dance Grange Festival takes place, the vineyard and winery has allowed the family to share in an agricultural and very natural product that not only will stand the test of time but also give their next generations something to revel in and enjoy.

The Classic NV, Pink NV and White From Black are their mainstay English sparkling wines. The addition of their own winery has allowed for them to experiment with still wines too and last year saw the first iteration of the Still Pink with blending in process for a Still White to follow this year.

Wickham Vineyard

Botley Road, Southampton, SO32 2HL

wwwwickhamestate.co.uk

Before Wickham Estate was a Vineyard, a family-owned the grounds and had it as an Apple Farm. The Chandleys decided that they wanted to own a Vineyard, did the research, and planted their first 7 acres in 1970. In 1974, the second 7 acres were planted, and they began the life of Vineyard owner.

The Vineyards looks a little different from a usual Vineyard you see as the Vines are spaced further apart. This is because the Family decided to keep their old apple farming equipment to harvest the Vines and this equipment is much bigger than Vineyard machinery!

Open for private events and tastings.
