Discover Southampton's fascinating history

Southampton has been an important port for more than 2,000 years. The Romans established a settlement here around AD 70, recognising the value of its sheltered natural harbour and strategic position on England's south coast. During the medieval period, Southampton became one of the country's busiest ports, trading wool, wine and luxury goods with continental Europe. The wealth generated by this trade helped fund the construction of the impressive medieval walls that still surround parts of the Old Town today.

The city has also played a remarkable role in world history. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from Southampton aboard the Mayflower and Speedwell before their historic journey to North America. Southampton later became one of the world's great ocean liner ports and is forever linked with the RMS Titanic, which departed from the city on her maiden voyage in April 1912. During the Second World War, Southampton was a key centre for aircraft production and engineering, most notably as the birthplace of the Supermarine Spitfire, the iconic fighter aircraft that helped defend Britain during the Battle of Britain. Today, Southampton combines its rich maritime, aviation and military heritage with its status as the UK's leading cruise port, welcoming millions of visitors from around the world each year.
